I remembered seeing hibiscus flowers growing in Florida when I was a child and would feed them to my cousins’ iguana, Max – they were his favorite treat! However, it wasn’t until recently, on the Big Island that I felt awakened to their magic. They perfectly capture the feeling here – the warmth of wonder, peace, and affection – essentially, the aloha spirit. What I love about these flowers especially is how I can get utterly lost when I look into each one, letting my mind go over and heart feel out each glorious detail. I attempt to capture some faint glimmer of their simultaneously complex and simple beauty in my offerings. I just love that each variety is so different! On this particular one, I happened to capture a bug that I mistook for a small dragonfly. This little guy is not only mesmerizing and adorable – he is a champion – eating one the flower’s ravenous pests.
